Last Sunday we decided to take a very impromptu trip to San Antonio for New Year's Eve. We left on Monday for a 3 day getaway and had a really great time! We've been to San Antonio several times but never around Christmas. Everything was decorated beautifully and it was the perfect getaway before heading into another semester!
I took this picture of the sunset while we were driving in Monday night. We didn't see the sun again until Saturday! It was so cold and drizzly the whole time we were there.
The kids are always so giddy at hotels. We went up to the ballrooms floor and they ran around for half an hour. We just checked out the hotel and watched a movie in our room.
We took the kids to the children's museum the next morning. We spent a couple of hours playing....
We checked into the Drury Plaza around 2:00 where we stayed the rest of the trip. We'd never stayed there before but I knew it was a bank from the 1940s/50s that had been renovated into a hotel years ago. It was a really beautiful place.
We had a great view of the river and the San Fernando Cathedral from our balcony. Fun fact...this is the oldest operating sanctuary in all of North America.
This was the view at night. Every tree on the river had draped Christmas lights like these. There is a 30 minute laser show projected on the cathedral on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 9pm. It tells the story of San Antonio. It was too cold to sit on the balcony so we watched from chairs at the window. It was really neat.
Our hotel stay included a breakfast buffet, a dinner buffet and popcorn and drinks in the afternoon so we didn't have to venture out much except to sight see a bit.
We enjoyed a couple of days of indoor swimming.
And lots of Scrabble with my girl
And bundled up twice to stroll the Riverwalk
But the best part of the trip was New Year's Eve! Our hotel had a terrace view of San Antonio's Hemisphere Park fireworks. We waited in the line to go out but Jeff found a window in the fitness center right next to the terrace and we deemed it the perfect (warm and uncrowded) place to camp out and watch the amazing fireworks show. We grabbed the last window at 11 and played UNO until it started :-)
Poor Keegan didn't understand why he couldn't just go to bed. He was so tired! I don't think he's ever stayed up until midnight before.
The fireworks were amazing. The crazy thing was fireworks were going off everywhere across the horizon. Everywhere we looked there were fireworks for over an hour. It was beautiful!
It was a great way to bring in the new year! I'm so thankful for these people I get to care for everyday. Welcome 2015!
